(A poetic tribute to Football - UEFA Euro 2020 held from 11 June to 11 July, 2021 and to the final of the Euro finals in which Italy emerged victorious, beating England in a thrilling penalty shoot-out)
The second wave died a slow death, in mid June;
as all's set in the battlefields of Europe, that wasn't too soon.
A carnival of the beautiful game followed for a month,
and every midnight, I sought solace at the TV's front.
All champions laid to rest and all past laurels count for naught;
only the present matters, a fact of brutal beauty taught.
Clash of best minds, exploits of the young and old;
are all packed in a schedule of ill timed 90 minute gold!
And, then at Wembley, the Azzuri took on the Three Lions,
A game of attrition followed, with the English defenders making early inroads.
And I was a kid again, reliving the fantasy of Italy winning 2006 World cup;
possession and passion clashed in equal measure, at the glory's cusp.
And into extra time and penalties, the game willingly stretched,
but what a side were the Azzuri, London's pride all painted blue.
All life's lessons taught in a game where all emotions invested,
A glorious end to a game and tournament that was so insanely and entertainingly contested!

Note - Azzuri refers to the Italian Football team and Three Lions refers to the English football team. Wembley is the name of the football stadium in London where the final match was played.
